or two years,
from 1209 to 1211, Francis put in practice, together with the first
twelve companions, the principles of the Rule, approved orally
from Pope Innocenzo III in the spring of 1209.
This first Franciscan Community lived in extreme poverty, satisfying
themselves with some bread, turnips and fruits begged in the
lowland in Assisi.
The Fiorettis and the whole primitive Franciscan Hagiography tell
touching episodes of this first life of the Order.
At Rivotorto, Francesco was the first one to sprinkle ashes
on his food to overcome the temptation of taste, and to bathe
in winter in the icy water of the Brook to defeat every weakness.
